Jannik Sinner beats Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros, achieves historic feat unmatched in 15 years

On Friday, Jannik Sinner delivered a commanding performance on Court Philippe Chatrier, defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets to secure his first-ever Roland Garros final. But beyond that achievement, the World No. 1 reached a remarkable milestone in his rivalry with the Serbian icon.

Sinner became the first player in 15 years to defeat Djokovic in four consecutive matches. Prior to the 6–4, 7–5, 7–6 win on the Paris clay, the Italian star had already beaten him in the final of the 2024 Shanghai Masters 1000, the semifinals of the 2024 Australian Open, and the semifinals of the 2023 Davis Cup.

With this latest result, Sinner now leads the head-to-head against Novak, 5–4, signaling a clear shift in momentum over the past few seasons—overturning the early edge Novak had built in previous years. Sinner praises Djokovic

In his post-match interview on Friday, Sinner didn’t hesitate to praise Djokovic—not only for his legacy but for the level he continues to display. “It was such a special occasion for me, playing against Novak in the semi-final of a Grand Slam,” Jannik said. “What he is doing is incredible and I wish him only the best for the rest of the season. I think we are all very lucky to see him playing such high-level tennis, it’s amazing.”

The Italian star also reflected on the match and his own performance. “It’s just amazing, and I had to step up and play the best tennis I could. I’m very happy how I handled the situation, but this shows again what a role model he is for all of us and especially for us young players,” said Jannik.

Finally, Sinner again emphasized Djokovic’s massive impact. “He achieved so many things. He is the best player in the history of our sport and playing against him here is amazing,” said the World No. 1. “Of course I try not to think about this, but before going on court you feel the tension and feel what is coming against you. I always try to prepare myself in the best possible way and prepare myself for every situation on the court.”
