In one of the day’s most surprising results, unseeded Lois Boisson defeated Jessica Pegula to reach the 2025 French Open quarterfinals for the first time. The French player rallied from a 3-6 loss in the first set, winning 6-4, 6-4 in the second and third.

According to Opta Ace, excluding unranked players, Boisson is the lowest-ranked player (No. 361) to reach a women’s singles Grand Slam quarterfinal since Kaia Kanepi at the 2017 US Open (No. 418). She is also the lowest-ranked player to reach the Roland Garros quarterfinals in the last 40 years.

Boisson made history for France as well, becoming the third-youngest Frenchwoman to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament in the Open Era, older only than Mary Pierce (1994) and Brigitte Simon (1978).

The 22-year-old, who tore her ACL last season just a week before Roland Garros and was out for nine months, now follows in the footsteps of Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic, who were the last Frenchwomen to reach this stage of the tournament in 2017.

Boisson will next face teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva, who also matched a historic milestone by equaling Martina Hingis’ feat of reaching the French Open quarterfinals as a teenager. Andreeva defeated Daria Kasatkina earlier on Monday.

Boisson vs. Andreeva head-to-head

This will be their first meeting. With her win over Pegula, Boisson is now 1-0 against Top 20 players in her career. Meanwhile, Andreeva is aiming to repeat her run from last year’s Roland Garros, where she reached the semifinals.

Boisson was also the only French player (male or female) to reach the Round of 16 in singles at this year’s French Open. Can she become the first French champion since Mary Pierce in 2000? She’ll have to navigate some tough challenges ahead.
