After a memorable college football career in Boulder, the Colorado Buffaloes‘ star duo of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter are now making the leap from the NCAA to the NFL. However, not everyone is celebrating. An anonymous member of the Buffs’ 1990 national championship team recently made a stern statement regarding the players whose jerseys were just retired at Folsom Field.
Much uncertainty surrounds Shedeur Sanders, as the former Buffaloes‘ quarterback awaits word on his NFL future. Reports suggest he could just as easily be selected first overall as he could fall out of the first round altogether.
His partner in crime, Travis Hunter, finds himself in a much smoother, more relaxed scenario. Dubbed the top talent in the 2025 draft class, the two-way college football sensation will be gladly scooped up by any team with the chance— with no second thoughts, whatsoever.
Though both Buffaloes alumni have left an undeniable mark in Boulder—having their numbers retired by the school—an unnamed member of the 1990 NCAA national title team dropped a blunt four-word comment on the two players, who have sparked polarizing opinions ahead of the NFL Draft.

Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Travis Hunter (12) runs the ball after a catch during the first half against the Kansas Jayhawks at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO.
“We’re celebrating mediocrity,” a member of the 1990 Buffaloes team who remained anonymous told The Athletic about the school retiring Sanders and Hunter’s jersey numbers. “Where are the wins? Where are the top-10 finishes? Go Buffs for life, but you have to just hold your nose and deal with it.”

NFL News: Mike Tomlin’s Steelers reportedly set to make big move for Shedeur Sanders amid Aaron Rodgers delay
Draft night drama
With Cam Ward expected to be the first player taken off the board, Shedeur Sanders’ future is trending to become the biggest storyline in the 2025 NFL Draft.
There aren’t many teams in desperate need for an immediate starting quarterback in this year’s draft, and therefore many could be wary of selecting Deion Sanders’ son, who would bring a whole lot of attention to the team.
NFL Insider Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS has reported that Sanders may no longer be considered a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. According to several reports, the plummet in his stock has been caused by his interviews with different teams, rather than his on-field performance.

Shedeur’s potential landing scnearios
Realistically, the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and Pittsburgh Steelers make the most sense as landing scenarios for Shedeur. However, the Browns have recently indicated more interest in either Penn State EDGE Abdul Carter or Sanders’ teammate, Travis Hunter.
The Giants, who have Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in their QB room, may look to draft whoever the Browns pass on and ride with their current quarterback tandem into the 2025 NFL season.

Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ profile: Age, height, love life, career and more
If the Saints pass up on Shedeur, then the once considered first overall pick could very well fall to the 21st pick where the Steelers await. Mike Tomlin has shown much interest in Sanders, but amid the dramatic back and forth negotiations with Aaron Rodgers, the franchise in Steel City might look elsewhere as well.

In that case, Shedeur’s dreaded scenario might come to fruition—falling out of the first round, along with the significant financial difference that entails, and the psychological toll of going from a projected top-5 pick to a second-round selection.
