The Miami Hurricanes are witnessing a true passing-of-the-torch moment as star Cam Ward embarks on his NFL journey, paving the way for Georgia transfer Carson Beck to take over as QB1 in Coral Gables during the 2025 NCAA season. As Ward participated in the Hurricanes’ Pro Day, he had a strong message for Beck.
Cam Ward was once in Beck’s shoes, transferring to the U ahead of his senior year in college football. Ward arrived from Washington State, made an immediate impact in Miami, and capped off his senior season as a Heisman Trophy finalist. Beck would be wise to listen to his predecessor’s advice.
Beck is coming off a rocky year in Athens with the Dawgs, highlighted by a UCL tear to his throwing arm during the SEC Championship Game. Much uncertainty surrounds Beck and his controversial arrival in Miami.
The 23-year-old QB had undergone surgery on his right elbow and declared for the NFL Draft, before backpedaling on his decision and entering the NCAA transfer portal to join Mario Cristobal’s program.

However, Ward has the utmost confidence in Beck, as he hopes to see the University of Miami and his former teammates succeed. Ahead of spring practice in Coral Gables, the projected first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft delivered a strong message for the new quarterback on campus.

“I think the biggest thing that I would tell Carson is just be himself and try to win games,” Ward said Miami’s Pro Day, as reported by Miami Herald. “At the end of the day, they can talk how bad they want about you, but if you win games, you’ve got the one-up on them.”
Cancelling out the noise
Beck has been one of the most scrutinized quarterbacks in college football over the past seasons, as his performances with the Bulldogs raised many eyebrows. However, Ward had his fair share of critics, as well. Even during his sensational campaign with the Hurricanes, the signal-caller was constantly doubted.
Ward did an excellent job of tuning out the noise surrounding him and the program, focusing solely on his growth and performance. It certainly paid off, with the Hurricanes having a strong season, despite the heartbreaking finale.

Built for success
As Ward reflected on his final moments as the Miami Hurricanes’ QB1, he shared a strong message about offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, suggesting Beck should have no trouble posting incredible stat lines thanks to the game plan week in and week out.

“Don’t really look at the stat sheet and what I did this year, because at the end of the day, it wasn’t hard,” Ward added. “You’re talking about a quarterback playing in coach Dawson’s offense. You should at least throw 30 touchdowns a year.”

Ward’s statement could backfire on Beck if the second-year senior falls short of the 30-touchdown mark with the Hurricanes. Beck’s time in Miami has gotten off to a shaky start, with off-field drama overshadowing his transition. Everyone within the program hopes that doesn’t carry over to the field once he is cleared to throw the football again.
