Aaron Boone admits troubling reality about Yankees rotation after just 13 games

The New York Yankees’ rotation is off to a rough start, and Aaron Boone hasn’t shied away from acknowledging it. With the season still young, the team is already facing questions about its pitching depth and consistency.

Aaron Boone has made it clear—he’s not satisfied with how the Yankees’ rotation is performing. With their ace out for the season, New York’s starting pitchers have struggled to deliver the consistency expected of them, and the poor results are already showing just 13 games into the 2025 MLB season.

Following a disastrous outing against the Giants—one that ended with Marcus Stroman undergoing X-rays on his knee—Boone didn’t sugarcoat the situation. He acknowledged that despite a strong start to the season from Max Fried, the rest of the rotation hasn’t held up.

“We’ve got to do better. Obviously we come off a great start with Max [Fried]… but we struggled to this point. Again, like just you said, it’s 13 games in, but we got to pitch better to put us in a good situation. So, we’ll keep working at it. Obviously Clark [Schmidt] is gonna join and that will help things. We got very capable people, but we got to get a little bit more.

Yankees’ ERA tells the story

The Yankees’ rotation ERA through 13 games paints a concerning picture. Max Fried has been the lone bright spot, posting a stellar 1.56 ERA. But beyond him, it’s been a struggle with the other 4 pitchers in the rotation.

  • Max Fried, 1.56 ERA
  • Carlos Rodón, 5.19 ERA
  • Marcus Stroman, 11.57 ERA
  • Carlos Carrasco, 7.71 ERA
  • Will Warren, 6.00 ERA

It’s worth noting that similar issues plagued the Yankees last season, with the starting rotation being one of the team’s weakest links. Back then, Gerrit Cole missed time with an injury—but unlike last year, he won’t be returning in 2025 following elbow surgery.

Boone addresses Yoendrys Gómez’s outing

Another source of concern was young Venezuelan pitcher Yoendrys Gómez, who struggled in his outing against the Giants. Boone pointed to the poor weather conditions as a major factor in his performance. “Ausmus and I were just talking, that’s probably the worst conditions we’ve ever experienced and we’ve been doing this for a long time,” Boone said.

Gómez also addressed the outing himself: “When you get an opportunity to go and compete, that’s what you want to go do.” Despite the challenges, Boone said Gómez is doing fine physically and is expected to continue pitching.
