Aaron Boone refuses to leave Devin Williams to fend for himself after another rough outing at home, raising further questions about the pitcher’s mental approach when taking the mound at Yankee Stadium—something that has become a recurring issue this season.
“Um, look, I think once he gets righted and really starts to string them together, as great as he’s been will show up. And then you start building real confidence, because you’re dialed and you have the ability to dominate. So we just gotta continue to stack those, and it doesn’t necessarily happen overnight when you go through it a little bit. And we all go through it a little bit. We all go through tough times and stretches in this game, and he’ll get through it.” Boone said.
Williams has struggled in his first season with the Yankees, facing growing criticism from fans after another rocky outing against the Padres, where he surrendered four runs. His ERA has surged following several rough performances, including back-to-back games in which he allowed seven runs across two appearances.
10.03 ERA is not a good sign for the Yankees
After the Yankees’ latest loss, where Devin Williams played a key role in the Padres’ rally, his ERA jumped from 8.00+ to 10.03, further highlighting his struggles. Despite this, Boone’s latest statement continues to show confidence in him.
“The biggest thing is command and being ahead and not putting guys on. Stuff is there. Stuff’s fine. I do believe he’ll get on a roll and be lights out and be dominant. But the command part of it, where walks are getting him behind in certain situations, that’s what hurts him,” Boone said.

If Cruz hadn’t come out, Williams wouldn’t have gone in
Fans saw Cruz exit the game, which surprised some when Williams took his place. However, Boone had a valid reason, explaining that Cruz he had thrown two full innings two days ago. Boone didn’t want to overload Cruz, which led him to bring in Williams instead for the 8th inning.
