Fresh off their eighth consecutive win, the Boston Red Sox are suddenly looking like one of the most dangerous teams in the American League — and manager Alex Cora is making sure everyone takes notice. After a dramatic 5-4 walk-off victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park, Cora couldn’t hold back his admiration for the youthful core powering the team’s resurgence.
The hero of the night was Ceddanne Rafaela, who blasted an 86-mph slider from Pete Fairbanks over the fence in the bottom of the ninth, sparking an uproar in Boston. The 24-year-old center fielder is just one of several rising stars pushing the Red Sox up the standings after a middling first half of the season.
“[Rafaela] is the best defensive center fielder in the big leagues. He’s hitting ninth in a pretty good lineup. It helps what we’re trying to accomplish. That was a great swing,” Cora said postgame, a glowing endorsement that captured the vibe surrounding Boston’s young core.
Red Sox youth movement making immediate impact
The Red Sox (now 51–45) have won eight straight games, a run that includes sweeps over the Washington Nationals and Colorado Rockies. But it was Friday night’s win over the playoff-contending Rays that truly signaled something has shifted in Boston’s clubhouse.
Alongside Rafaela, Cora singled out two more names — Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony, just 22 and 21 years old respectively — for playing well beyond their years in pressure moments.

“It was Marcelo, Roman, and Rafaela. That’s pretty young,” said Cora. “The future of this organization is bright. The present is bright, too.”
Boston faces defining stretch against contenders
Now riding high, Boston’s schedule only gets tougher. After wrapping the three-game series with the Rays, the team will head to face the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies on the road before returning home to host the Los Angeles Dodgers — all division leaders and playoff-caliber clubs.

Still, this Red Sox squad seems unbothered. Led by young, fearless contributors and a manager who has fully embraced the team’s underdog status, Boston is playing with a sense of freedom that could prove dangerous for opponents down the stretch.
