Brett Baty reacts after third error of the year helps end Mets’ streak

The New York Mets recently dropped a game in Los Angeles, largely due to another error from Brett Baty — his third of the season.

Brett Baty committed his third error of the season — and it was a brutal one. The third baseman’s miscue proved costly as it helped the Los Angeles Dodgers rally to defeat the New York Mets and snap the team’s recent winning streak.

After the game, Baty didn’t hold back in owning up to his mistake. It’s just a very, very dumb mistake. It can’t happen in that situation,” he said. The Mets infielder called the sequence at home plate, which stemmed from his error, “terrible” and admitted it directly contributed to the Dodgers’ comeback win.

Baty had just committed his second error of the MLB season a few days earlier — an errant throw to Pete Alonso at first base — but the Mets managed to escape with a win that night against the Dodgers in Game 2 of the series.

Carlos Mendoza doesn’t hold back on Baty’s error

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was clearly frustrated with Baty’s miscue in the eighth inning. “Just didn’t make a routine play there,” Mendoza said, referring to the error that allowed Will Smith to score the tying run.

Reflecting on the loss, Mendoza added: “We ended up splitting the series here, but felt like we gave that one away. We were sloppy today. We didn’t play well. It cost us there. We’ve got to turn the page and get ready for a new series.”

What’s next for the Mets

The Mets now hit the road for a series against the Colorado Rockies — a team Baty has already faced this season. In three previous games against Colorado, Baty tallied two hits, one run, and three RBIs in five at-bats, bringing his batting average to .247.
