Brewers linked to intriguing trade target with Rockies despite concerning stat line

The Milwaukee Brewers are ready to make moves at the trade deadline, and one of the players they could target comes from the Colorado Rockies — but he brings a concerning stat line that may raise eyebrows.

The Milwaukee Brewers look rock-solid atop the NL Central with a 61-41 record and don’t appear to have any glaring needs on the roster. Still, like all contenders, they’re expected to explore ways to improve as the MLB trade deadline approaches — and one of their targets may come from the Colorado Rockies.

One player the Brewers have reportedly shown renewed interest in is someone who’s struggled mightily at the plate this season. He leads all Rockies players in strikeouts with 127 — the only other infielder on the team with over 100 is first baseman Michael Toglia.

Things haven’t gone well for the Rockies in 2024. A managerial change hasn’t shifted the team’s trajectory, and their 26-76 record is a reflection of just how rough the season has been. Amid the chaos, the Brewers may be looking to poach a veteran who’s spent nine years with the organization.

Who is the Rockies player drawing interest from Milwaukee?

According to a report from Sean Wright, the Brewers have renewed their interest in third baseman Ryan McMahon. Milwaukee reportedly checked in on McMahon during the offseason, but a deal never materialized. This time, the outcome could be different.

“With the trade deadline approaching, the Milwaukee Brewers have renewed talks with the Colorado Rockies about third baseman Ryan McMahon, sources tell me. Milwaukee explored McMahon in the offseason and continues to seek infield upgrades as July 31st nears.”

What could McMahon bring to the Brewers?

Right now, McMahon is batting just .217 — a steep drop from his .242 average last season. Still, he remains a consistent producer with a track record worth considering. Since 2021, McMahon has recorded at least 130 hits per season and has played in 150+ games each year. A seasoned veteran, he could offer Milwaukee reliable power, a steady bat, and around 20 home runs annually.
