The Chicago Cubs know the trade market could provide key opportunities to help them stay in the hunt for the NL Central title. With October in mind, their priority is keeping the mound as strong as possible—and reinforcements could come from two arms currently pitching for the Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins.
The pitchers the Cubs are reportedly interested in have plenty of big-league experience. The Nationals‘ reliever owns a career ERA of 3.68 over six seasons but is working through a slightly disappointing 4.62 ERA in 38 appearances this year.
On the other hand, the Marlins pitcher drawing interest has spent five seasons in Miami and currently holds the third-best ERA among the team’s starters at 3.48. He’s started 17 games this season with a 4–4 record.
Who are the pitchers on Chicago’s radar?
According to a report from Ari Alexander, the Cubs are showing interest in Edward Cabrera of the Marlins and Kyle Finnegan of the Nationals. Whether a deal materializes remains to be seen, but all eyes are on the approaching trade deadline.
It’s worth noting the Cubs had also been eyeing Seth Lugo as a potential addition to their rotation, but the right-hander recently reached an agreement to stay with the Kansas City Royals for a few more seasons.
Cubs Still Locked in the NL Central Battle
Chicago is currently locked in a tight race with the Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot in the division. Both teams are sitting at 62–43 and look poised for a postseason run. The Cubs have gone 13–8 in July, and the final series of the month could be pivotal—it’s a showdown in Milwaukee to determine who leads the NL Central heading into August.
