Devin Williams couldn’t stop the New York Yankees from losing at home, with his rough outing allowing the Padres to capitalize on his lack of control, scoring four runs and stealing the game in dramatic fashion.
After the loss at Yankee Stadium, where Williams became the target of heavy criticism on social media from fans, the Yankees reliever made it clear he still feels good physically and mentally, blaming part of the struggles on poor mound conditions.
“I feel good. I feel confident on the mound. I felt like I was in a good spot,” Williams said after the game. “It’s one of those nights where you’re not only battling the hitter, but I was battling the mound. We’re all given the same set of circumstances. I couldn’t come through tonight.”
Bad season for Williams
One stat that highlights how poorly Williams is performing with the Yankees in 2025 is the number of runs he has allowed. If you add up the runs he gave up in 2023 and 2024, he’s already matched that total this season in New York— 13 runs —and the season hasn’t even reached its halfway point yet. On top of that, he has an ugly 10.03 ERA and only 4 saves.

Fans, reporters, and others haven’t held back their criticism of Williams’ struggles this MLB year. Eric Hubbs of Barstool Sports was among those voicing frustration, stating, “Really, really bad Yankees loss. Just can’t get out of their own way. Devin Williams continues to be a massive problem.”

Yankees’ bullpen isn’t perfect
Williams’ struggles haven’t completely wrecked the Yankees’ bullpen, which still holds a 3.25 ERA, ranking 8th in that category. They also have the third-highest strikeout total, with 145, proving that despite tough outings—like the recent one against the Padres—the bullpen still has players capable of winning games.
