Kyle Schwarber remains red-hot at the plate. And despite the Philadelphia Phillies’ recent loss to the Cardinals, the slugger continued his on-base streak and quietly revealed who’s been behind his surge against left-handed pitching — a matchup he’s historically struggled with.
After the game, Schwarber credited Phillies hitting coach Kevin Long for helping him improve against lefties. That improvement is no longer just anecdotal — Schwarber is now hitting .304.
“You try to get to that point where you make it just a pitcher. You don’t view it left-left, right-right, whatever it is. You just view yourself as hitting. You kinda wanna take the stigma away from that,” Schwarber said postgame about his mindset at the plate.
Lefty Numbers Back It Up
Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports shared Schwarber’s stats on X, showing just how productive he’s been against lefties. He’s hitting .966 OPS against southpaws since the start of last season, including a .321 average and 7 home runs this year alone. That performance is especially timely with him set to hit free agency at the end of the season.

Kyle Schwarber #12 of the Philadelphia Phillies celebrates his solo home run in the seventh inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks during a game at Citizens Bank Park on May 02, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
But in Monday’s game, it was lefty Matthew Liberatore who got the better of Schwarber and the Phillies. Schwarber recorded just one run and one hit, while Liberatore held the lineup to two runs in a tightly contested pitching duel.

Phillies Still in the Hunt
Despite the 6-3 homestand-ending loss, the Phillies remain in strong shape at 24-17 (.585), just behind the Mets in the division standings. There’s still plenty of time left in the MLB season, and with key players like Schwarber heating up, they remain very much in the race.
