The MLB offseason is busier than usual, with many teams looking to strengthen their rosters ahead of the upcoming season. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/seattle-mariners">Seattle Mariners</a> were unable to re-sign Jorge Polanco, who ultimately agreed to join the New York Mets, and now they have two targets in mind to add to their roster.



According to journalist Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mariners’ primary targets are Ketel Marte, currently with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Brendan Donovan, a player for the St. Louis Cardinals.



“The Mariners, seeking to rebound from the loss of free-agent infielder Jorge Polanco to the New York Mets, remain in the mix for the Diamondbacks’ Marte as well as the Cardinals’ Donovan, according to people briefed on their pursuits,” the insider wrote.



“Donovan’s defensive versatility makes him in some ways a better fit for Seattle,” Rosenthal also added. “He mostly has played second and left field in the majors, but also has experience at every other position but catcher and center field. With a number of Mariners position prospects getting close to the majors, his ability to move to other spots would be especially valuable.”

According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, infielder Jorge Polanco agreed on a two-year, $40 million deal. Passan reported he is expected to play first base and designated hitter for the Mets. 



Polanco, who was an All-Star in 2019, can play second and third base too if needed. This brings some versatility on the diamond for the Mets. This is the first move the team has done after <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/pete-alonso" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pete Alonso</a> and Edwin Diaz’s departures and also, the Brandon Nimmo trade. 



<h2>Polanco is a veteran presence but more needs to be done</h2>



While Polanco had an All-Star appearance in 2019, he hasn’t been able to go back to that form ever since. There’s no doubt that Polanco is a very good talent, but at 31 years old, Mets fans must wonder if he will ever go back to that version. After all, replacing Pete Alonso is no easy task.

Last season with the Mariners, Polanco had 26 home runs, 30 doubles and 125 hits. While good numbers, those are all below what Alonso posted. Hence, the Mets need more moves to help Polanco and the team replace what the Polar Bear brought to the team.

In the batting department, while his numbers are lower than Alonso’s, Polanco had clutch moments for the Mariners last year. He is not afraid of big moments and delivered constantly. Mets surely will love that part of Polanco’s game.

This deal places him in the Top 10 highest-paid players at his position.



Naylor’s average annual salary, according to Spotrac, will be $18.5 million, ranking him among the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/mlb">MLB</a>‘s top-10 paid first basemen. <h2>What was Naylor’s signing bonus?</h2>



To start 2026 with cash in his pocket, the Mariners gave Naylor a $6.5 million signing bonus. According to Spotrac, he had never received such a bonus when signing his previous short-term deals with the Diamondbacks, Padres, or Guardians. He is set to become a free agent in 2031.
