Gerrit Cole has been a significant absence for the New York Yankees this regular season. His remarkable pitching performance last year was instrumental in bolstering the team’s World Series aspirations. Unfortunately, Cole is currently in the process of recovering from a challenging injury.

While there is optimism regarding his potential return for the latter part of the season, contingent upon the Yankees making it that far, the team currently shows little indication of securing a postseason berth. However, Cole is diligently working towards recovery and made a notable appearance on the field Monday, albeit just to begin light throwing.

In a modest but significant milestone, Cole managed 20 throws, assessing his condition following the medical team’s decision not to clear him for gameplay this season. This season has proven to be one of the most challenging in recent years for the Yankees, as they struggle to clinch a postseason spot.

After completing his first set of throws since sustaining the injury, Cole addressed the media about his current status. “I felt really good today; I had a great time,” Cole stated. “It’s a significant step for me. I was eagerly anticipating this moment for weeks, and finally being out there doing it felt incredible.”

Cole’s insights on Will Warren

The Yankees have placed considerable trust in their pitching staff this season, yet recent performances have not met the desired standards, casting doubts on the team’s chances for a postseason berth. Amidst these struggles, Cole expressed his views on Will Warren, a key player in the Yankees’ bullpen with the most games pitched this season (25), highlighting how Warren navigates these challenging circumstances.

Reflecting on Warren’s approach, Cole commented, “He [Warren] is working on trying to figure out how he can be just a little bit more efficient and get deeper in the ballgame,” a testament to Warren’s dedication and determination despite the daunting task ahead.
