The Chicago Cubs are set to generate significant buzz in the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays, as head coach Craig Counsell fields one of the Cubs’ top prospects, Owen Caissie, this afternoon at Rogers Centre in Toronto, following the injury to Miguel Amaya.
Caissie has already sparked excitement among the Cubs fan base, particularly in the wake of Amaya’s absence. The match against the Blue Jays presents a unique opportunity for Caissie, as the stadium is reportedly merely 35 miles from his high school. This proximity adds a personal layer to his Major League Baseball debut.
With the stage set at Rogers Centre, Caissie joins an elite list of MLB players. By stepping onto the field today, he become only the third Canadian to make his MLB debut in Canada.
That feat was not achieved since Dennis Boucher did so with the Blue Jays in Toronto 34 years ago. Alongside Caissie and Boucher, Rob Ducey was the first Canadian to debut in Canada, playing for the Blue Jays in 1987 in a game against the Texas Rangers.
Caissie makes history
Caissie steps onto the field and he makes history as the first Canadian to debut in Canada donning a jersey other than the Blue Jays’. Despite any mixed emotions, he’s likely to reminisce about attending games in Toronto as a high school fan.

The buzz surrounding his debut has not gone unnoticed. Head coach Counsell addressed the media about Caissie’s potential inclusion in the lineup. “I’d love to have him be in the lineup, but we’re just gonna wait and see what his scheduled arrival time is,” Counsell stated. However, it’s official for the Cubs that he will take 5th turn at-bat.
Caissie’s jersey number for MLB debut with the Cubs
Amidst the speculation surrounding Caissie’s debut against the Blue Jays, it has been revealed that he will wear number 19. This number could soon be associated with a historic chapter for both Caissie and the franchise in his home country.
