Trent Grisham continues to shine in New York Yankees‘ lineup while filling in at center field, and his performance on Wednesday—a two-home-run game—was enough to catch the attention of manager Aaron Boone.

Following Game 2 of the series between the Yankees and Pirates, Boone spoke to YES Network and praised the young outfielder for how well he’s handled his role so far, especially the impact of his power at the plate.

“Impressive, used to line to line, big homer, get us going in there and then obviously a big three-run the other way, just really more good swings, playing great in center, exciting for him and just how well he is playing, how big he’s been for us here early.”

Grisham has now hit three home runs this season, with his first coming in the final game of the series against the Diamondbacks, where he also drove in three runs. So far, he’s posted a 1.357 OPS—an elite MLB number for someone coming off the bench.

Grisham reveals his mental approach

In a postgame interview with Meredith Marakovits, Grisham gave insight into what’s been working for him at the plate. He credited his recent success to staying mentally focused and present in the moment.

“I’ve just been doing a really good job mentally to stay in the present, I think that’s really about it. Swing’s been here and there throughout, but I’ve stayed really locked in mentally.”

He added that even though he’s not playing every day, delivering a two-homer game felt great and that he’s been competing regardless of the Yankees’ game situation.
