Aaron Judge’s absence from the Home Run Derby isn’t exactly breaking news. The Yankees star hasn’t participated in the event for years, and throughout the 2025 season, reporters have repeatedly asked if that might change. Each time, his answer has stayed the same.
“Nope. Same answer,” Judge told Newsday when asked about competing in the 2025 Home Run Derby — a response he’s consistently repeated. That confirmation, once again, leaves fans disappointed, especially those hoping to see him slug towering shots against this season’s current home run leader, Cal Raleigh.
Judge’s first — and only — appearance in the Derby came back in 2017. That year, he defeated Cody Bellinger in the semifinals, 13-12, before edging Miguel Sanó 11-10 in the final. It was also the second-most-watched Home Run Derby in history, drawing 8.6 million viewers.
What Would Bring Judge Back to the Derby?
There’s only one condition that might tempt Judge back into the Derby — and he’s been clear about it: it would have to be held at Yankee Stadium. He sees that venue as the perfect stage to show off his power in front of the home crowd like never before.
“Only if I’m talking about it here [in New York],” Judge said, expressing his desire to see the MLB All-Star festivities return to the Bronx. The last time New York hosted the All-Star Game was in 2013 at Citi Field. Yankee Stadium hasn’t hosted since 2008.
What Does It Take to Join the Home Run Derby?
To participate in the Home Run Derby, a player — whether it’s Judge or another big-time slugger — must be selected or invited. Fan support and strong home run numbers throughout the season also help secure a spot.
