The Los Angeles Lakers are facing growing scrutiny after Luka Doncic suffered a hamstring injury during a blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. With the team trailing by more than 30 points in the third quarter, many questioned why the star remained on the floor at all, especially after appearing to experience discomfort earlier in the game.

The situation quickly shifted attention toward head coach JJ Redick, who was forced to defend his rotation decisions. Critics argued that leaving Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves in a game that was essentially out of reach created an unnecessary risk, particularly with the playoffs just around the corner.

Adding to the controversy, Doncic had been seen grabbing his leg before halftime, fueling speculation that the Lakers may have pushed too far in a low-leverage situation. The optics of the injury, combined with the scoreline, made the decision a major talking point after the game.

Why did the Lakers play Luka Doncic vs Thunder?

JJ Redick acknowledged that the coaching staff had already discussed limiting minutes at halftime, suggesting the plan was never to extend the starters for long if the deficit remained large. The intent, according to the coach, was to give the group a short window to attempt a comeback before shutting things down.

“Yeah, I mean, it was discussed at halftime. I thought we’d give those guys about six minutes and then, if we didn’t cut the lead, we were going to pull them. Obviously, it was around that time that the injury happened.”

Despite the explanation, the decision continues to draw debate. With the Lakers already locked into a playoff berth and Doncic clearly feeling discomfort since the first half, many believe the safer move would have been to sit him entirely. Now, with his postseason availability uncertain, the question of whether the risk was necessary remains front and center.
