The Los Angeles Lakers remain stuck in a rough patch with four consecutive losses. This slump follows one of their best moments of the season. During that stretch, they enjoyed an eight-game winning streak that lifted them to second place in the Western Conference. However, injuries have severely weakened their defensive unit. Defense had been the Lakers’ strongest asset during their winning run. After their recent loss to the Denver Nuggets, JJ Redick shared a strong assessment of his team’s struggles.

Speaking on Spectrum SportsNet, Redick acknowledged several areas of concern, particularly their early struggles on the defensive end. ā€œā€¦Our transition defense was pretty bad from the first six minutes on. And then fighting back and taking a lead. There’s a lot we could’ve done better but the group competed tonight and gave ourselves a chance to win,ā€ stated Redick.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Redick affirmed having found positives in the team’s resilience and effort. The Lakers managed to battle back after a shaky start, showing determination and grit against one of the league’s top teams. Lakers’ lack of consistency on the defensive end remained a concern, especially during transition plays that the Bucks capitalized on throughout the night.

Redick also praised the performances of role players who stepped up when called upon. ā€œThe spirit was great. I think it’s been that and will continue to be that. I think it was a good opportunity for a number of guys to play bigger minutes. Shake (Milton), in particular, Christian (Koloko) defensively in the second half was awesome. Happy for those guys that they played well,ā€ added Redick.

The Lakers’ recent progress has not been enough to improve their NBA standing. Their defensive unit continues to struggle. Opponents have repeatedly exposed their weaknesses in transition. These defensive lapses often lead to easy scoring opportunities. To turn their season around, improving their defense is crucial.

Despite his impeccable performance, Dalton Knetch made an important self-criticism after his team’s poor performance: ā€œJust like you said, they executed. We were short on guys but we fought through that and they were up 10 and went on their runs, but we came right back and made the game close right away. We just went out there and played our part and they just executed at the end. So just gotta watch film and learn.ā€
