The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t get off to the start they hoped for in the NBA playoffs on Saturday. In a highly anticipated matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, JJ Redick’s squad fell short of expectations, looking far from a championship-caliber team. Following the disappointing Game 1 loss to Anthony Edwards and company, Lakers legend Magic Johnson didn’t hold back, offering a brutally honest assessment of the team and Redick’s approach.
While Luka Doncic delivered an impressive individual performance, the Timberwolves thrived through teamwork, something the Lakers lacked. Despite Edwards not matching his regular-season dominance, Minnesota executed well as a unit, proving they’re in the playoffs on merit, not luck.
Redick quickly became one of the focal points after the loss, but for the wrong reasons. At least, that was Johnson’s takeaway after the Lakers’ underwhelming showing.
“Coach JJ Redick did a great job all season, but he didn’t do a good job for Game 1,” Johnson posted on X. “The Lakers stood around on offense, played too much one-on-one basketball, and he didn’t make any necessary adjustments.”

Lakers struggle against Timberwolves in lacklustre performance
The Lakers faced serious challenges on the court Saturday night, falling flat in a disappointing effort against the Timberwolves. According toJohnson, one of the biggest issues was the team’s lack of energy and execution, an ongoing concern during parts of the regular season that once again surfaced during this matchup.

Johnson didn’t hold back in his postgame analysis on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Tonight was one of the Lakers’ worst performances this season,” he wrote. “They were flat, had no energy, and they played like it was a regular season game.”
Several players struggled to make an impact. Dorian Finney-Smith, for instance, contributed just 3 points in over 30 minutes on the floor. LeBron James had a quiet night by his standards, finishing with 19 points. Doncic led all scorers with 37 points, but it wasn’t enough to carry the Lakers past a sharp Timberwolves squad.
Redick reflects on Lakers’ struggles, LeBron’s usage
After the loss, head coach Redick addressed the media with honest feedback, offering insight into both the team’s performance and LeBron James’ role in the offense in Game 1 of the NBA playoffs.
“Schematics-wise in the half court, we’ll take a look at everything,” Redick said. “That’s hard to overcome typically when a team is shooting like they did tonight. Probably got to do a better job in mixing in some off-ball action for LeBron.”
