The Golden State Warriors enter Game 3 of their NBA playoff series against the Houston Rockets with the matchup tied 1-1. While the Warriors, led by Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green, are considered favorites, recent developments both on and off the court have added tension to the team’s playoff run.
One headline-grabbing moment came Thursday night, when the NBA announced its Defensive Player of the Year winner ahead of the Nuggets-Clippers game. Among the finalists were Cleveland’s Evan Mobley, New Orleans’ Dyson Daniels, and Warriors forward Draymond Green. Ultimately, Mobley took home the award — a decision that didn’t sit well with Curry.
Although Mobley and Daniels posted stronger defensive statistics throughout the season, Curry appeared to challenge the narrative that numbers alone tell the full story. In a bold Instagram story following the announcement, Curry posted a message alongside a photo of Green receiving the NBA Hustle Award: “Respect. Definitely my DPOY too, but see you on 1st team.”
The tone of Curry’s message carried a hint of frustration toward the league, seemingly calling out the lack of recognition for Green’s impact on the defensive end. It also served as a vote of confidence that Green will be named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team when honors are revealed later this postseason.

Injuries cloud game 3 outlook
While Curry voiced support for his longtime teammate, the focus in Golden State now shifts to more pressing concerns: injuries. The Warriors are facing uncertainty around the availability of both Jimmy Butler and Gary Payton II ahead of Saturday’s Game 3 at Chase Center.

Butler, who exited Game 2 in Houston with a pelvis contusion, underwent an MRI on Thursday. In an official team statement released on X, the Warriors confirmed the injury: “Jimmy Butler III, who exited Wednesday’s game in Houston due to a pelvis contusion, underwent an MRI yesterday. The MRI confirmed the injury as a pelvis and deep gluteal muscle contusion. His status for Saturday’s Game 3 is questionable.”
Steve Kerr sends hopefully message
Speaking with the media on Friday, head coach Steve Kerr expressed cautious optimism. “I think there’s a chance he plays,” Kerr said. According to ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk, Kerr added he’s “relatively optimistic” about the 35-year-old’s recovery.
The availability of both Butler and Payton could play a significant role in how the rest of the series unfolds. For the Warriors, regaining momentum on their home court while navigating injuries and maintaining their emotional edge could be the key to advancing.
