The underwhelming performance of last season in the NFL led many to reassess the direction the San Francisco 49ers should take moving forward. Brock Purdy has been a key piece in Kyle Shanahan‘s system, and the franchise’s owner, Jed York, sent a clear message regarding the player’s future and potential contract renewal.
Since his arrival in the NFL, Purdy has taken charge of a team with a lot of talent around him, and he even had the privilege of playing in a Super Bowl. That being said, many believe that Mr. Irrelevant deserves recognition in the form of a lucrative contract extension.
Regarding this situation, the owner of the Bay Area franchise himself addressed the efforts that have been made over the past few months to give Purdy what he truly deserves, while also forecasting prosperity in the upcoming negotiations.
“We knew that we had to make sacrifices around the roster to make sure that you can pay a quarterback,” Jed York said to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo from the NFL’s Annual League Meeting. “It’s just math.”

Owner Jed York of the San Francisco 49ers is seen on the field prior to a game against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on December 15, 2022 in Seattle, Washington.
“I think (contract talks have) been good,” York said. “It’s not conversations that I’m having. … He’s got to make a decision with what he wants to do. I don’t think we’re that far apart. I think we can sit down and get something done. Whenever he’s ready, we’re ready.”

York’s criticisms of the system
Much has been said recently about Purdy’s earnings, which were considerably lower than, among others, several deals made in College Football through the NIL. York expressed frustration over not being able to improve his player’s conditions, especially considering Purdy played the last few years under his rookie contract.
“Last year, (Purdy) was the 30th highest-paid college quarterback,” 49ers owner stated. “So when guys with NIL are making more than a third-year NFL pro, there’s something wrong with the system with not being able to extend guys earlier in the NFL.”
An important decision to make for York
Securing a lucrative contract extension is not an easy decision to make, especially when those responsible for making it aren’t entirely certain they are doing so with the right player.
“I’ve been in situations where you have a great roster and the quarterback isn’t set, and it’s hard to have sustained success,” York said. “We want to make sure that Brock is a long-term partner. We want to make sure that he’s a part of our team for a long time.
“It’s a decision — I don’t know exactly when we made it — but it was sometime in the middle of the season, knowing that you can start negotiating at the end of the third year, and it’s like, ‘All right, he’s our guy.’ And if he’s our guy, you have to know that and make those decisions, and that’s where we are right now.”
