The Green Bay Packers suffered a big scare during the first game of their NFL preseason. Their starting quarterback, Jordan Love, suffered an injury and his future was in jeopardy. Now, head coach Matt LaFleur has provided good news for the Cheeseheads and it only took him three words.
LaFleur explained that Jordan Love had to undergo a procedure to repair a ligament in his left thumb. “Surgery went well,” LaFleur said to Ashley Washburn of TMJ4 Milwaukee. “He’s in great spirits and he’s here with us. So, now it’s just about putting in the work to get the thumb rehabbed.”
Even better, the timeframe for Love’s return is very soon. According to LaFleur,“I wouldn’t say right away, but we anticipate there will be some sort of participation next week.” This puts him on pace to easily recover for Week 1.
Love might be on a ‘prove it’ year
Entering his fifth year, the jury’s still out on Love’s quality as a quarterback. Many are divided on whether he’s an excellent signal-caller, or just one of the bunch. Love sat the first two years of his NFL career because Aaron Rodgers was still at Green Bay, so we’ve seen him for two seasons.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love (10) looks on during the NFL, American Football Herren, USA game between the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Rams on October 6, 2024, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA.
Love has an 18-15 record as a starter, completing 63.5% of his passes. Those numbers aren’t other worldly. However, it’s his touchdown-to-interception ratio the one that creates hype around him. He has thrown for 60 TDs and only 25 interceptions.

Who is Love’s backup?
The other question is: if Love’s not healthy enough, who will play for the Packers? Malik Willis is the one tasked to guide the offense. Drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Willis failed to earn a spot on the Tennessee Titans. He started only three games for the Titans and went 1-2.
However, last season he played seven games for the Packers, starting two of them and winning both outings. He was actually pretty good as he completed 40/54 passes (74.1% completion) for 550 yards and three touchdowns to no interceptions. It’s safe to say Matt LaFleur puts any quarterback on a great system that allows them to shine.
