Mike Tomlin, Steelers give second chance to former Josh Allen teammate in pursuit of new weapon for Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to continue strengthening their roster ahead of the 2025-26 NFL season. To this end, Mike Tomlin's team reportedly seeks to give a former Josh Allen teammate a second chance to bolster support for Aaron Rodgers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off the 2025 preseason with an impressive win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, showcasing their potential strength. However, their unexpected defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers revealed some vulnerabilities in their lineup. To bolster their competitive edge, Mike Tomlin’s squad aims to bring in a former teammate of Josh Allen. This addition could offer Aaron Rodgers much-needed support and reinforcement on the offensive front.

According to renowned NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Pittsburgh Steelers are set to meet for a second time with former Josh Allen teammate Gabe Davis. This follow-up session aims to assess the wide receiver readiness to compete while working towards agreeing a contract—an objective that eluded Mike Tomlin‘s team and the wide receiver during their initial meeting in June.

Although Gabe Davis showed strong performance during his time with the Buffalo Bills, his last NFL stint with the Jaguars was underwhelming. He played only 10 games, averaging 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, his time there was plagued by a shoulder injury and a torn meniscus, which sidelined him for the rest of the season. For that reason, they released him in May 2025.

Gabe Davis, known for his remarkable tenure with the Buffalo Bills, joined the Jacksonville Jaguars with high expectations. However, during a recent interview on “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast,” Davis disclosed why his performance did not meet these expectations.

The wide receiver explained that a meniscus injury, which first occurred while he was with the Josh Allen’s Bills on the 17th game in 2023, hindered his ability to recover fully and impacted his performance with the Jaguars.

Are the Pittsburgh Steelers also exploring other wide receiver options?

Although the Pittsburgh Steelers remain interested in signing Gabe Davis, he is not their only target. NFL insider Mark Kaboly reports that the team seeks to bolster its wide receiver depth, leading to consider Terry McLaurin as a potential acquisition. The Washington Commanders’ standout has consistently performed, averaging 82 receptions and 1,096 yards over 17 games in the 2024-25 NFL season.

In addition to McLaurin, the Steelers are also eyeing Odell Beckham Jr. The veteran receiver, now 32, revealed on the Club Random Podcast that he has spoken with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and did not shy about a possible move. While these high-profile additions remain unconfirmed, the team is reportedly eager to lock down a deal before the kickoff of NFL Week 1.
