Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs have accomplished one of their main goals at the start of free agency. According to a report from Ian Rapoport, Trey Smith has signed his franchise tag, guaranteeing that he will protect Patrick Mahomes next season.

The offensive line was the Chiefs’ biggest headache in the last Super Bowl against the Eagles, so keeping Smith was a priority. It’s important to remember that Reid and Brett Veach are shaking up this unit after they let go of Joe Thuney in a trade with the Bears.

Who just signed with the Chiefs?

The Chiefs intend to negotiate a long-term deal with Trey Smith to make him one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in NFL history. The first step was ensuring that he would play with the team in 2025. That’s done by signing the tag.

General manager Brett Veach had used a non-exclusive franchise tag on the veteran, meaning other NFL teams could make offers to Smith. In that hypothetical scenario, the Chiefs could either match the offer or, in return, receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.
