Mike Tomlin wants Aaron Rodgers as the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it’s already an open secret in the NFL. However, if the veteran rejects the offer, the head coach reiterates that he already has a fully qualified man on his roster to take on that responsibility: Mason Rudolph.
“We’ve been in turnover in that room. None of the guys from 2024 will be on our 2025 roster, but I think that’s one of the things that made Mason Rudolph such an attractive acquisition for us. We know his talents. He’s certainly capable. We like the intangible quality of him as a human and as a football worker. I just think the familiarity is very comforting.”
Although many experts believe that Rudolph wouldn’t make the Steelers real Super Bowl contenders, he had impressive flashes in 2023 when replacing Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky. Mason took the team, which was nearly eliminated, and led them on a great streak that brought them into the playoffs at the last minute, where they were defeated by the Bills in the Wild Card round.
Who will be Steelers starting quarterback in 2025?
Mason Rudolph could be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers if Aaron Rodgers rejects the team’s offer and prefers the Minnesota Vikings or retirement.
At the moment, the only name on the roster alongside Rudolph is Skylar Thompson, so he clearly has the upper hand. Even if they bring in another available veteran like Joe Flacco or Carson Wentz, Mason’s familiarity with the Steelers after playing with them for six years would likely give him that role, at least heading into training camp and the preseason.
