NFL News: Mike Vrabel makes a strong statement about Stefon Diggs’ role with the Patriots and Drake Maye

Mike Vrabel wants to assemble the best possible roster for the New England Patriots ahead of the 2025 season to support Drake Maye. One of those players is Stefon Diggs, whom Vrabel recently spoke candidly about.

Mike Vrabel understands the importance of surrounding rookie quarterback Drake Maye with experienced talent, and the addition of Stefon Diggs provides exactly that. As a veteran receiver with ten years in the league, Diggs brings a wealth of knowledge from his time with the Vikings, Bills, and most recently, the Texans. Vrabel emphasized his commitment to supporting Maye, stating, “Yeah, just trying to make sure we’re supporting Drake and supporting the football team.”

Vrabel highlighted Diggs’ versatility in Green Light with Chris Long, saying, “This is a highly competitive, confident receiver that’s produced throughout his career in multiple ways.” He also noted Diggs’ ability to play physically, create separation with precise route running. “He’s got a play strength to him that you see, that he can play physical, you know, route craft … good at the catch point, has been good in the red zone,” Vrabel added.

The Patriots’ new head coach sees Diggs as more than just a reliable target for Maye—he values the veteran’s leadership and presence in the locker room. “There’s a play style to him that I’ve always appreciated, and that we want to, you know, continue to enhance and make sure that, you know, he’s doing things to help us,” Vrabel explained. As New England looks to build a competitive offense, Diggs’ ability to mentor younger players and contribute in key moments will be crucial.

Vrabel has been impressed with Diggs’ attitude and approach since their initial conversations, reinforcing the belief that he will be a strong addition to the team. “It’s just his conversation, his demeanor, his attitude, and his presence have been, you know, great through our conversations,” Vrabel said. He remains focused on bringing in the right players to elevate the Patriots, concluding, “And hopefully we can, you know, continue to add good players.”

Stefon Diggs’ Last Season Was Rough, but It Doesn’t Matter

Despite a limited and disappointing 2024 season for Stefon Diggs due to injury, where he managed just 496 receiving yards, there’s strong optimism that he can bounce back in 2025 with the Patriots and quarterback Drake Maye. If healthy, Diggs could return to his usual form of producing 1,000+ yards per season—a streak he held for six consecutive years starting in 2018. His best year was 2020, with 1,535 receiving yards and 127 receptions.

A New Opportunity for Maye

Although the Patriots are somewhat limited in offensive weapons for Drake Maye, he now has a fresh opportunity under head coach Mike Vrabel, who has a proven ability to maximize his roster’s potential, as shown during his time with the Titans.

Last season was challenging for Maye, as he threw for just 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. His top targets, wide receiver Demario Douglas and tight end Hunter Henry, both recorded 66 receptions and over 600 receiving yards. However, the Patriots lacked a true playmaker in their receiving corps—a void they’re hoping to fill this year.
