Patrick Mahomes will have a new backup on the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2025 NFL season. With Carson Wentz hitting free agency, Andy Reid and company decided to bring in Gardner Minshew this offseason.
On Wednesday, Mahomes spoke about his new teammate for the first time. Speaking to the media via Zoom, the 2x NFL MVP looked optimistic about the Chiefs QB room for the 2025 season.
“I thought we were going to have a really good quarterback room just in general,” Mahomes said, via Sports Illustrated. “I think having Gardner, a guy that loves the game, comes in the right mentality every single day and a guy that pushes the envelope.“
Mahomes is used to having elder backups in Kansas City. While Wentz spent only one year with the team, the Chiefs previously had Mahomes work with Chad Henne, Matt Moore, and Blaine Gabbert. Minshew is the latest name to join the list, and Mahomes gave Reid reasons to believe.

“I think having someone that’s going to push me to take chances down the field will be big to continue to work and build our chemistry on the field, but push each other off of it as well,” Mahomes added.

Andy Reid believes Minshew will be good for Mahomes
Before Mahomes publicly approved Minshew’s arrival, Reid also made sure to praise the newest quarterback on his team. Not only does the Chiefs coach think highly of Minshew, but he also believes he and Mahomes share the same passion for football.
“He’s a good football player. I think it’ll be a good relationship between the two of them,” Reid said of Mahomes and Minshew, as quoted by Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports. “Gardner is a great kid with a humble personality. Loves to play the game. Those are things Pat has, too. It should be a good working relationship there.“

Minshew, by the way, is also looking forward to working with Mahomes and Reid in Kansas City. After facing them twice with the Las Vegas Raiders in the AFC West, the 28-year-old can’t wait to be part of the Chiefs.
“I’m super fired up to be part of a winning organization and a winning culture. I feel like I have so much to learn about how Coach Reid and Pat operate,” Minshew said. “I look forward to doing whatever I can to contribute and help this team win.”
