Patrick Mahomes is giving Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs reasons for optimism ahead of the 2025 NFL season, with the quarterback providing an encouraging update on one of his biggest weapons.

During a conversation with reporters via Zoom on Wednesday, Mahomes revealed that Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice looked in promising shape during recent throwing sessions in Texas.

ā€œThe expectations are high,ā€ Mahomes said of Rice, via Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports. ā€œI mean, he looks really good. He’s running routes. He’s catching the football. I don’t know when we get back into the actual OTAs, how much he’ll be able to do, but he’s been able to do everything here, as far as running routes and everything like that.ā€œ

Not long ago, Reid and Mahomes received a positive update from Rice as the wideout shared he’d been cleared to start working on his route running. The quarterback’s recent comments confirm that the Chiefs should be excited about Rice’s progress.

Mahomes reflects on accidental tackle that injured Rice

The wide receiver has been on the sidelines since September 2024, when Mahomes injured Rice by accidentally tackling the wideout after throwing an interception during the Chiefs’ Week 4 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mahomes obviously felt bad about it, as not only he hurt a teammate, but also sidelined a key weapon in his offense. Flash-forward to 2025, the quarterback is confident that Reid and company will see an even better version of Rice in the upcoming NFL season.

ā€œAnd I know it was unfortunate how he got hurt last year, but it was so early in the season that he’s going to get pretty much a complete offseason, which I think will be big going into this season,ā€ Mahomes said.
