When it comes to naming top contenders in the NFL, Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs are always one of the first teams that come to mind. Once again, Patrick Mahomes and company will aim for another Super Bowl appearance, but uncertainty looms over the team’s facilities as a key player’s contract situation remains unresolved.

Trey Smith, one of the most important pieces in the Chiefs’ lineup and a key protector of Mahomes on every snap, continues to push for a contract extension. However, so far, there are no clear signs that a deal is close to being finalized.

According to the latest reports from NFL insider Ian Rapoport via his official X account (formerly Twitter), the star guard is aiming to secure a multi-year extension before the deadline.

“The #Chiefs and star guard Trey Smith have been having talks surrounding a multi-year deal, though it remains to be seen whether he gets one before tomorrow’s deadline,” the reporter stated.

Trey Smith’s importance to the Chiefs

Trey Smith is an indispensable part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line, serving as a Pro Bowl-caliber right guard and a key protector for Patrick Mahomes. His consistent performance in both pass blocking and run blocking has made him a foundational piece of the offensive success, contributing significantly to their Super Bowl victories.

Should Trey Smith leave this team, it would create a significant void on their offensive line. Given that Kansas City recently traded another key interior lineman, Joe Thuney, losing another key player in the short term would severely weaken the protection for Patrick Mahomes and likely impact the team’s ability to run the ball effectively.

A tough deal for some

While many believe a deal between Smith and the Chiefs will eventually get done, others — including NFL analyst Mike Florio — argue it won’t be an easy task.

“Given the Chiefs’ annual postseason runs, the team gets much more out of its players than other teams receive,” Florio said via nbcsports.com. “Already, Smith has played 13 extra games in four years — taking 100 percent of the snaps in each one…”

“From Smith’s perspective: His deal needs to contemplate something more than the paltry playoff checks for the 3.25 extra games he has played, per year,” he also added.
