The New York Rangers have quietly reshaped their identity this offseason, moving on from several long-standing core players who once carried the weight of championship aspirations. As the dust settles from the departures of K’Andre Miller, Jacob Trouba, and Chris Kreider, attention has turned to the future of Mika Zibanejad—a player long considered part of the franchise’s foundation.
Zibanejad, under contract through the 2029–30 season, has become a focal point of speculation following the Rangers’ disappointing 2024–25 campaign. The team not only missed the playoffs but did so after finishing with the best regular-season record in the NHL just a year prior. The tension surrounding Zibanejad isn’t just about cap space—it’s about whether his leadership aligns with the franchise’s new direction under recently appointed head coach Mike Sullivan.
But while trade rumors swirl, reports suggest the organization is working proactively behind the scenes. According toElliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, the Rangers and Zibanejad are “trying to make it work,” avoiding a repeat of the noise and distractions that accompanied the start of the past two seasons.
What’s the status of Mika Zibanejad?
Zibanejad’s contract includes a full no-move clause, giving him complete control over his future. According to Friedman, the Rangers have not asked him to waive the clause or submit a list of teams he’d be willing to join. That means any deal would require the veteran center’s full cooperation and approval—something that hasn’t been discussed formally.

“It’s very clear (the Rangers) are working with Mika Zibanejad,” Friedman said. “They’re trying to figure out a way to make it work and avoid the noise.”

“You never know if it’ll continue, but the bottom line is, this season is not starting the way the last two did (with trade rumors and speculation).” He added. A sign of that commitment came during the offseason, when head coach Mike Sullivan reportedly traveled to Sweden to meet Zibanejad face-to-face.
What’s next for the Rangers and Zibanejad?
For now, Zibanejad remains in New York’s plans. His leadership, two-way play, and connection to the city are still valued assets in the locker room. But with a shifting roster and a front office looking to pivot, nothing is off the table.

As the new NHL season approaches, the Rangers appear focused on stabilizing their core. Whether Mika Zibanejad remains a part of that long-term vision depends as much on his commitment as it does on the team’s evolving strategy.
