Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett, and Aaron Ekblad targeted by Canadian contender closely watching their future with Panthers

The Florida Panthers may be facing competition from a new suitor reportedly interested in making offers for Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, and Aaron Ekblad, whose contract situations remain uncertain heading into the 2025–26 NHL season.

The Florida Panthers were crowned back-to-back NHL champions just hours ago, and they already have to focus on keeping their core intact, with stars like Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, and Aaron Ekblad all facing unresolved contract situations. In this context, one team is looking to seize the opportunity.

Going case by case, the easiest renewal to secure appears to be Bennett’s. He has already confirmed his desire to stay with the Panthers, and there are reports of an eight-year extension offer on the table. Talks between both parties remain active.

In Marchand’s case, the 37-year-old veteran made a bold statement by reportedly telling GM Bill Zito to “give him a contract.” Despite being away from his family in Boston, it seems clear that the veteran forward wants to stay in Florida. However, for him, Bennett, and Ekblad alike, there’s an alternative option: interest from another franchise.

Which Canadian team is pursuing the Panthers’ stars

NHL insider Nick Kypreos reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs are planning to make offers for Marchand, Bennett, and Ekblad, all of whom could become unrestricted free agents on July 1 if their extensions remain unresolved in Florida.

According to Kypreos via the Toronto Star, the Leafs’ potential offer for Ekblad would hinge on convincing Morgan Rielly to waive his no-move clause. The Canadian franchise is undergoing a roster overhaul amid the likely departure of star forward Mitch Marner and is aiming to add quality veterans to its lineup.

The Leafs’ interest in three key Panthers players is striking, especially given the recent playoff history between the two teams. Florida eliminated Toronto in two of the last three postseasons. Just days ago, the two-time Stanley Cup champions knocked out the Leafs in seven games during the second round. Back in 2023, the Panthers also eliminated Toronto to reach the Eastern Conference Final for the first time since 1996.
