In a game that defied all logic and expectations, Mikko Rantanen and the Dallas Stars watched as the Vancouver Canucks pulled off one of the most stunning comebacks in recent NHL history, scoring three goals in the final minute of regulation to force overtime and ultimately defeating the Stars 6–5 on Tuesday night. Kiefer Sherwood sealed the win with 1:16 remaining in overtime, leaving the Stars and their fans in disbelief.
Facing elimination from Stanley Cup playoff contention with a regulation loss, the Canucks made history by becoming the first team in NHL history to erase a three-goal deficit in the final minute of the third period. The Vancouver bench erupted in euphoria, while the stunned Stars struggled to process the collapse.
Aatu Raty began the improbable rally with a goal at 19:00 of the third period. What followed was a furious offensive burst: Pius Suter scored twice in the final 30 seconds after Vancouver pulled goaltender Thatcher Demko for an extra attacker. Suter cut the deficit to 5–4 at 19:30, then tied the game 5–5 with a sharp-angle shot just seven seconds before the buzzer. In overtime, Sherwood capped off the miracle with a powerful finish off a setup from Conor Garland.
Rantanen’s blunt reflection after stunning collapse
Following the dramatic loss, a visibly frustrated Mikko Rantanen delivered a stern message to his teammates. “I thought tonight was overall a pretty good game until the last minute,” Rantanen told NHL.com. “You have a three-goal lead with one minute left and lose 6–5,it’s crazy. We’ve all got to look in the mirror and try to be better. These things can happen in the playoffs—you’ve got to play until the end and make strong plays in front of the net, not give up easy ones.”
Rantanen emphasized the importance of full-game focus, especially with the postseason approaching. “It’s not easy to flip the switch in the playoffs, that’s for sure. We’ve got to take some of the positives from our 5-on-5 play, but the ending is definitely frustrating.”
