Mitch Marner is getting closer to leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs, and his future is sparking a heated debate not only across the NHL, but also within the Canadian franchise, especially around star forward Auston Matthews.
Marner has not signed a contract extension with the Maple Leafs and is shaping up to be one of the most sought-after free agents on the NHL market. His current deal, a six-year, $65.4 million contract (with a $10.9 million annual cap hit), is set to expire on July 1. If no new agreement is reached by then, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
His departure would mean that the Toronto franchise is losing a player who consistently contributes over 100 points per season. At this point, it seems to be only a matter of time. In fact, negotiations between Marner and the Leafs’ front office, led by general manager Brad Treliving, have stalled. This situation could also impact Matthews’ future.
How would Marner’s departure affect Matthews?
“If Marner goes somewhere else, for (Auston) Matthews… whatever was going on with him this year, that didn’t look right for him. The numbers weren’t the same, just didn’t look right. Maybe a change is best for all—a new linemate, a new look at things. But it’s hard to walk away from 100 points,” said NHL insider Ray Ferraro on TSN’s OverDrive.

According to Ferraro, Matthews’ future could change significantly if Marner leaves the team. The departure of a forward of that caliber would create an opportunity to reshape the roster, potentially allowing the team’s top star to reclaim a central leadership role in the elusive quest to win the Stanley Cup.

Where could Marner be headed?
Speculation has intensified in recent days, as Marner is on the verge of being free to decide where he wants to play. Reports from last week suggest that the Toronto forward is not interested in continuing his career with any of the Canadian franchises and would prefer a complete change of scenery. Within that context, the Los Angeles Kings have reportedly shown interest, but nothing has been confirmed so far.
