The Chicago Blackhawks have officially opened negotiations with rising star Connor Bedard, laying the groundwork for what could become one of the most important extensions in franchise history. Bedard, who led the NHL team in points for two consecutive seasons, became eligible to re-sign on Tuesday and now stands at the center of a pivotal long-term discussion.
General manager Kyle Davidson confirmed the development during a media availability, noting that both sides are aligned on the desire to continue building together. The 19-year-old phenom, drafted first overall in 2023, is entering the final year of his entry-level contract. His on-ice performance, paired with a public commitment to the city, signals mutual optimism about a new deal.
According to NHL.com, Davidson offered a measured update. “I probably don’t want to get too far into it, but we are talking,” he said. “He’s committed to Chicago and wants to be here long-term, and we obviously want him here long-term, so there’s mutual agreement there.“
What’s the timeline for a new deal?
Bedard officially became eligible to re-sign on July 1. Though there is no immediate deadline, both sides appear aligned on establishing a contract that reflects his value and role within the team. Davidson acknowledged that while the desire for an agreement exists, navigating the new salary cap landscape could affect the pace of negotiations.

“If we’re able to get something done (soon), that would be fantastic,” Davidson added. “But if we don’t, I think it’s probably more so out of the uncertainty around how the League and the system is going to be growing or impacted moving forward than anything player/team related.”

The NHL’s recently extended CBA and rising salary cap may reshape how teams structure long-term deals. For the Blackhawks, it presents an opportunity to secure Bedard through his prime while managing their financial flexibility.
Bedard stays focused on Chicago
Despite speculation earlier this year about potential frustration with the team’s slow rebuild, Bedard has reiterated his commitment to the city and its fans. Following a 25-win season, he addressed rumors head-on.
“I’ve said it so many times — I love being here, and the city, the people,” he said in April. “We’re in a process of growing and learning, and that’s an exciting time. When you lose, it makes winning a lot sweeter once you get there.”
