The wait is almost over. The 2025–26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season will be stopped in its tracks, making way for the Olympics. The long-awaited best-on-best international competition is looming on the horizon, with every roster decided for each country.



However, when it comes to Team Canada, the Maple Leafs face a dilemma involving Brayden Point, who has been dealing with a lower-body injury and whose status for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/winter-olympics">Winter Olympics</a> remains up in the air. In that regard, Team Canada head coach Jon Cooper—who also coaches Point on the Tampa Bay Lightning—dropped a revealing admission.



“That decision is being made today so I can’t answer that,” Cooper stated on Point’s availability for the 2026 Olympics, via @JayRecher on X. If Point is indeed ruled out, Bedard would become a frontrunner to replace the 29-year-old center.

According to a report from The Athletic, Cooper and Team Canada have put together a list of reserve players. Based on that report, Bedard, Johnston, and Scheifele are joined by other forwards such as Seth Jarvis and Travis Konecny on the list.



<h2>Why Bedard makes sense as a replacement</h2>



If Point is out, it’s fairly reasonable to believe Bedard could get the call-up. With Point most likely headed for a winger role on Team Canada, if he is out, Bedard could do exactly the same job. Both are undersized centers on a roster filled with stars capable of manning the faceoff dot. 



Still, some argue Bedard’s decision to step down from the 2025 IIHF World Championship is still frowned upon by Team Canada. Whether it comes back to bite him and cost Bedard his chance to represent the True North in the Olympics remains to be seen.

The NHL trade deadline is still a long ways ahead—set for March 6 at 3pm ET—but it’s never too early for teams to receive calls and knock on doors around the league. On that note, a report indicates the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> have been doing their due diligence on some veteran teammates of Bedard and company.



“Frank Seravalli mentioned on the pregame show that the Blackhawks have received ‘lots of calls’ to this point on Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy. He said both are ‘likely’ to be moved by the trade deadline to open up spots for [Anton] Frondell, [Sam] Rinzel, and potentially others,” as reported by @BlackhawksFocus on X.

Both Dickinson (30) and Murphy (32) are playing the final year of their contracts with the Blackhawks. Chicago’s 5–6–1 record without Bedard this season indicates just that. Now, in order to ensure Bedard never misses another game, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jeff-blashill">Blashill</a> and company have made a drastic decision: Bedard is being barred from the faceoff dot.



“Blashill said Bedard will continue not taking any draws ‘for the foreseeable future‘,” as reported by Chicago Sun-Times. The coaching decision has been issued to protect the wonderkid who injured his shoulder on Dec. 12, 2025 in a last-second faceoff against the St. Louis Blues. Though cleared for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> action, Chicago believes it’s best for Bedard to be kept on the wing when the puck is dropped.

<h2>Precautionary approach to Bedard’s injury</h2>



During the loss to the Capitals, Bedard was initially played on the wing. However, Blashill did instruct him to return to his center position occasionally. One thing was clear, though, Bedard would take no part in faceoffs.

Though being left off Team Canada’s roster for the 2026 Olympics broke Bedard’s heart, there is a still a slim chance for him to join the Maple Leaf in Milan. On the one hand, Bedard would avoid re-aggravating his shoulder injury by being left off faceoffs. However, that could also be seen by Team Canada GM Doug Armstrong and head coach Jon Cooper as a sign that he is not fully healthy. 



If it came down to it, the Canadian team may have to resort to a last-minute option, and a Bedard who can’t be trusted to win faceoffs—an area he blossomed in during the year—could be the deciding factor between calling him up or resorting to another candidate. Needless to say, Canada can put together a gold-medal–caliber roster entirely made up of players currently set to miss the Olympics, so options abound for Team Canada.

Desperate times can lead to irrational actions, which has now resulted in the NHL Department of Player Safety assessing a maximum fine to defenseman Matt Grzelcyk.



“Chicago’s Matthew Grzelcyk has been fined $2,604.17, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for cross-checking Ottawa’s Tim Stutzle,” as announced by the Department of Player Safety on X, @NHLPlayerSafety.



The decision comes in the wake of Grzelcyk’s cross-check to Stutzle’s neck/face area during the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a>’ 6-4 defeat on the road to the Senators. Stutzle was assessed a roughing penalty on the play, whereas Grzelcyk received a double-minor for high-sticking.

Throughout the game, the Sens didn’t let the incident slide, going after Grzelcyk repeatedly. With both out of the lineup, the Blackhawks virtually lose all of their offensive prowess.

Bedard’s injury came with awful timing. Just start that kind of rehab process and hopefully be back as soon as possible.”

<h2>Report confirms injury sustained by Bedard</h2>



According to NHL insider Kevin Weekes, Bedard suffered a separated shoulder. The Blackhawks have placed him on Injured Reserve (IR), retroactive to Dec. 12. While head coach Jeff Blashill and the Hawks are listing him week-to-week, Bedard would rather be considered day-to-day.

With the 2026 Olympics looming on the horizon, Bedard’s injury only adds to the drama surrounding Team Canada’s roster for the international contest. “Not to me personally,” Bedard admitted. “Maybe to [Blackhawks GM] Kyle [Davidson], my agent, or something, but I’m not too sure about that. Obviously, I think that’s something they would do and just see. But I’m sure stuff comes out quick. You’ll probably get a text in about the exact day. I’ll be back, but yeah, I think maybe [Team Canada reached out to] them, but not to me personally.”
