NHL News: Canadiens reportedly face major setback on possible trade for Ducks RFA Mason McTavish

The Montreal Canadiens are reportedly encountering a significant obstacle in their pursuit of Anaheim Ducks RFA Mason McTavish, casting doubt on a potential trade that had generated considerable offseason buzz.

The Montreal Canadiens’ hopes of acquiring Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks may be fading fast. Despite the forward remaining unsigned, recent insights suggest the Ducks aren’t eager to move the 21-year-old center — and for good reason.

The trade chatter intensified after Anaheim shipped out Trevor Zegras, leading some to wonder whether McTavish could be next. However, multiple insiders have cautioned against overanalyzing the Ducks’ strategy. According to NHL insider Dennis Bernstein, the idea of McTavish heading to Montreal doesn’t align with Anaheim’s long-term vision — or head coach Joel Quenneville’s preferences.

“So, yeah. So while Habs can wish and hope and pray and dream that Mason McTavish can some way wind up in Montreal. I don’t see Anaheim letting go of him at this point in time in their development,” Bernstein told TSN Radio.

Why doesn’t a Mason McTavish trade make sense for Anaheim?

Bernstein pointed out that McTavish, despite being unsigned, lacks leverage as an RFA and is more valuable to the Ducks‘ future than ever. With Leo Carlsson projected as the top-line center, McTavish profiles as a long-term 2C, potentially anchoring Anaheim’s core for the next decade.

Even with a bridge contract in the $5–6 million range, he remains a cost-controlled asset the Ducks aren’t likely to part with — especially given their offensive struggles last season.

Could the Canadiens still make a play?

It’s no secret that Montreal is looking to strengthen down the middle, and McTavish fits the bill. But the cost to pry him away could be significant. Anaheim GM Pat Verbeek, who favors bridge deals and comes from the Steve Yzerman school of development, has clashed with players over contracts before — notably Zegras and Jamie Drysdale, both now with the Flyers.

For now, the Canadiens may have to look elsewhere, unless Verbeek’s stance unexpectedly shifts in the coming weeks.
