Connor McDavid has not started talks with the Edmonton Oilers regarding his historic contract extension. The insider who revealed this situation, Chris Johnston, also mentioned what recipe interested teams should follow if the star becomes a free agent.
“You need to have the cap space to sign him and be able to prove to him demonstrably that you have a chance to win once you sign him to that contract. If you can line it up like that, I think you’re in the ball game. You need to have a plan because, more than anything, there’s no negotiation. It’s literally, he’s going to pick his terms more or less. So, it’s about everything else around that.”
Johnston has pointed out that there are several teams capable of making an attractive offer to McDavid if he becomes available. In this context, other NHL reports have emphasized that the Toronto Maple Leafs would hold a certain advantage, as long as Connor decides not to accept a new deal with the Oilers.
Is Connor McDavid going to leave the Oilers?
The Oilers are the favorites to re-sign Connor McDavid, according to Chris Johnston, meaning the star might not leave Edmonton. Despite the rumors about the player testing free agency, the insider maintains that a contract extension remains the most likely outcome as of today.
“I don’t really know. It’s too soon to say or to handicap who’s the most likely to sign him or anything like that. Again, probably the most likely is Edmonton frankly to re-sign Connor McDavid if we’re being clear here. He’s still at the peak of his game. He would be doing it at this time when the cap is like taking a monster leap. This really unique period in time. You know it must be in his mind a little bit.”
