As offseason rumors gain momentum, the major topic for the Edmonton Oilers is the future of superstar Connor McDavid. The franchise captain is entering the final year of his contract, and possible scenarios are starting to unfold in case an extension is not reached. In that context, a potential deal with the Boston Bruins has made progress.
There is plenty of speculation surrounding a possible new contract between McDavid and the Oilers. Even major-market franchises like the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers are closely monitoring his situation in case no agreement is reached.
In Edmonton, contingency plans are being put in place in case McDavid does not extend his contract, with moves that could serve as a prelude to a much larger trade. Within that scenario, the Bruins are reportedly close to finalizing a negotiation framework with the Oilers.
The potential Bruins–Oilers trade
In recent days, reports have suggested that the Boston Bruins and the Edmonton Oilers have been discussing a possible market move. The name at the center of the rumors is Fabian Lysell, a former first-round pick by Boston who has yet to make his NHL debut and whose progress in the AHL seems to have stalled.

Connor McDavid #97 of the Edmonton Oilers warms up prior to a game against the Florida Panthers during Game Three of the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Final at Amerant Bank Arena on June 09, 2025 in Sunrise, Florida.
According to NHL insider Dominic Tiano, cited in the Edmonton Journal by David Staples, Lysell could be part of a package in these preliminary talks. While it may seem like a minor trade at first, the deal could escalate into a larger agreement involving other young forwards or even an AHL goaltender.
