Brad Marchand won the Stanley Cup after joining the Florida Panthers, following 14 years of trying to achieve that goal with the Boston Bruins. In a moment of uncertainty about his future as he approaches free agency, rumors of a potential return to his former team in the 2025-26 NHL season reached the ears of General Manager Don Sweeney.
A recent report indicated that one of the Bruins’ rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs, is preparing to make a major offer to Marchand. Speculation is growing stronger as July 1 approaches. NHL insider Paul Bissonnette even went as far as to predict that this will be the new destination for the Panthers’ star forward.
Marchand, meanwhile, spent three months away from his family after leaving Boston for Florida. That temporary separation could be seen as a reason for a potential return, which led Sweeney to break his silence and respond to whether the 37-year-old forward might come back to the Atlantic Division franchise.
Could Marchand return to the Bruins?
“My only comment is that I exchanged texts to congratulate Brad. Beyond that, he’s a player on another team, so I have nothing to say on the matter. You know, he deserves congratulations along with the Florida Panthers,” Sweeney said in a press conference when asked about a possible return for Marchand.

Boston Bruins lock in Don Sweeney through 2028.
At the moment, there are no active negotiations for Marchand to return to Boston, although the veteran forward and Sweeney remain in contact and maintain a good relationship. Time will tell where his future lies, but based on the Bruins GM’s words, it doesn’t seem to be on the ice at TD Garden.

What did Marchand say about returning to the Bruins?
“Could things change in the future? Possibly, but that remains to be seen,” Marchand said back in March, shortly after joining the Panthers. For now, his options remain open, from signing an extension with Florida to joining another franchise.
