Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner emerged together in the NHL during the 2016–17 season, forming a dynamic offensive duo for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Since then, both established themselves as key pieces of the franchise, until Marner’s departure to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Marner closed the chapter on an iconic partnership after nine seasons in Toronto, during which he recorded 741 points in 657 games, placing him among the top five scorers in the team’s modern history.
While the departure of the current Golden Knights forward was a major shake-up, his absence is felt not only on the Maple Leafs’ roster but also at community events like the annual Hockey Night in Brampton, which raises funds for the William Osler Health System.
Matthews replaces Marner
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown announced that Matthews will play in the Hockey Night in Brampton charity game, set for Wednesday, August 20, featuring NHL stars and legends. This year, the Leafs’ superstar will take Marner’s spot, as the winger settles into life in Las Vegas ahead of the season.
“I’m honored and excited to be part of Hockey Night in Brampton this year. It’s always special to give back to the community through the sport that has given us so much. Seeing players like Mitch, John, and Max take part in the past made it clear how important this cause is,” Matthews said, according to Maple Leafs Daily.
