Several NHL teams were keeping a close eye on star forward Mikko Rantanenâs situation with the Carolina Hurricanes in the final hours before the trade deadline. The forward came to the Canes from the Colorado Avalanche in a blockbuster trade, but a few days later, after several rumors, his future is with another franchise.
Rantanenâs cycle in Carolina did not go as expected. There was a lot of expectation surrounding the 28-year-old forward, but he has not been able to establish himself on the team and playing for another franchise was the best decision for the situation.
The Rantanen trade was a huge three-team deal involving the Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks. However, the factor that always complicated his stay in Carolina was his expensive contract extension. With his future settled, the Finnish star has agreed to terms with a new team.
Where will Rantanen play?
Rantanenâs new team is Dallas Stars, which will be his third home for the 2024-25 NHL season. As reported by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on his X account (formerly Twitter), the 28-year-old forward will sign an 8-year, $12 million extension in Dallas.

How long did Rantanen play for the Hurricanes?
Rantanenâs short stint with the Canes was cut short by failed contract extension negotiations with the Carolina star. The former Colorado player played 13 games with Carolina and scored a meager two goals. He scored 42 goals with the Avs last year, but had an outstanding season in 2022 when he scored 25 points in 20 playoff games.
