The Buffalo Sabres remain mired in one of the NHL’s longest playoff droughts. After a frustrating 2024–2025 season, the team has now gone 14 straight years without reaching the postseason, leaving fans eager for a long-awaited breakthrough.

The Sabres finished with an overall record of 36-39-7, placing seventh in the Atlantic Division. They were far behind the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, as well as the Lightning and division winners, the Maple Leafs.

Now, Buffalo also has to deal with Alex Tuch’s contract, which expires after the 2025–2026 season. New reports are shedding light on what’s next for one of the team’s key players.

Is Alex Tuch a free agent?

Alex Tuch is not a free agent at the moment. He remains under contract with the Buffalo Sabres through the end of the 2025–2026 season. That means he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026 unless a new deal is reached before then.

According to a report from David Pagnotta, the final decision regarding Tuch’s future has already been made. “The Sabres have started preliminary talks with Alex Tuch to keep him on a long term deal. They want to make it happen. All indications are he does.”
