Despite the perennial organization crisis affecting the Sabres, Thompson has been a <strong>standout in Buffalo for a long time,</strong> being among the league’s top goal scorers. Now, the Canadiens are reportedly trying their luck with the Arizona-native.</p>



<p>As reported by insider Marco D’Amico, the Canadiens are <strong>among the teams to check in with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/buffalo-sabres" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sabres</a></strong> about Tage Thompson. <em>“The answer: Not available at this time,” </em>D’Amico stated on X, though. </p>

<p>So far in his career, <strong>Thompson registers 182 goals and 155 assists</strong> (337 points) through 463 appearances. Moreover, the former first-round selection (drafted by the St. Louis Blues) in 2016 has three 30-plus goal seasons, including a career best 94-point season, highlighted by his 47-goal production. </p>



<h2>Wanting out</h2>



<p>Though Thompson hasn’t publicly asked for a trade out of Buffalo, it’s easy to imagine he might be open to a fresh start. After turning 28 in October, the 6’6” centerman <strong>may sense the clock starting to tick</strong>. Being on his 9th NHL season, Thompson has yet to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and he could be just what a team like Montreal need to truly be a championship contender. </p>



<p>However, the contract situation can’t be ignored. Thompson entered the third season of the <strong>seven-year, $50 million extension </strong>he signed with the Sabres on August 2022. Montreal currently has $6.68 million available in cap space. In order to accomodate, Thompson’s $7.14M cap hit, the Habs would have to let go of some pieces—or the Sabres must retain a part of Thompson’s salary.</p>

<p>It’s still early in the NHL season, so there’s no need for the Canadiens to rush into a move. Montreal has weathered the storm just fine so far, sitting atop the Atlantic Division. However, when the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin to loom on the horizon, <strong>the Habs could resume their pursuit of Thompson</strong>—most likely around the trade deadline. They won’t be alone, though. If Buffalo fails to right the ship, expect Thompson to be one of the hottest names in the league come March.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brad-marchand">Brad Marchand</a></strong> and the <strong>Florida Panthers</strong> are going through a rough patch early in the 2025-26 <strong>NHL</strong> season. Their frustrations erupted during the 3-0 loss to the <strong>Buffalo Sabres</strong> on Saturday, with Marchand <strong>losing his head against an opponent and eventually getting fined for it</strong>.</p>



<p>On Sunday, the official X (formerly known as Twitter) account for the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Marchand is getting the <strong>maximum allowable fine under the Collective Bargaining Agreement</strong> for his actions against the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/buffalo-sabres">Sabres</a>:</p>

<h2>NHL fans not satisfied with the fine on Marchand</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>‘s reaction <strong>didn’t seem harsh enough</strong> for some fans, who complained in the comments section of the post <strong>calling for a bigger punishment.</strong> “<em>Does he still have more disciplines than games suspended? I thought history was supposed to be a part of this?</em>,” a user wrote.</p>

<h2>How player fines work in the NHL</h2>



<p>When it comes to player fines, the CBA states they can be fined <strong>up to 50% of their daily salary</strong>, with the <strong>maximum capped at $10,000 for a first offense and $15,000 for repeat offenses</strong> within 12 months.</p>



<p>“<em>NHL fines are laughable. If the league and NHLPA want fines to be a deterrent then they have to be based on wage. First fine, 5 percent of your salary. Second 10 percent and so on…something like that. 5 grand is nothing to these guys. If fines don’t hurt, they have no effect,</em>” a user complained.</p>



<p>Marchand is currently under a <strong>six-year, $31.5 million contract</strong> with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Panthers</a> signed during the offseason, in a deal worth an <strong>average annual value (AAV) of $5.25 million</strong>. This fine is deducting money from that deal, but at least it’s not forcing Marchand to miss games. </p>



<p>And <strong>that’s exactly what many fans</strong>, especially from Buffalo, are complaining about. “<em><strong>This should have been at least a game</strong>. The actions he undertook have no place in the game</em>,” a user commented on X.</p>

<h2>The reason Marchand was punished after loss to Sabres</h2>



<p>For those who need context, the NHL’s fine on Marchand is related to a heated moment that occurred <strong>during the second period</strong> of the Panthers’ loss in Buffalo. With Florida trailing 1-0, tempers flared after Marchand was pushed from behind by Sabres defenseman <strong>Rasmus Dahlin</strong>.</p>



<p>The Sabres were in control of the puck when Marchand tripped and jumped on Dahlin, throwing punches at his opponent while the Swedish was down. Other players and the referees immediately stepped in, <strong>but it didn’t end there</strong>.</p>

<p>Marchand still had Dahlin’s helmet when he went to the penalty box, where he <strong>started to rip the straps off the helmet</strong> before throwing it back to the ice. The veteran star didn’t get a penalty for the helmet but still <strong>had to spend four minutes away</strong>, two for interference and two for roughing.</p>



<p><strong>And it took a toll on the Cats</strong>, as the Sabres capitalized on the power play to take a two-goal lead, paving the way for a comfortable 3-0 victory. This only deepened the Panthers’ current crisis in the 2025-26 NHL season.</p>

<h2>Ziemer excited about reuniting with friends in Buffalo</h2>



<p>The uncommon reunion of these longtime friends from Minnesota—years after going their separate ways and now all drafted by the Buffalo Sabres—is a rare sight in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>. That’s why Brodie Ziemer still finds it hard to believe. Yet, he can’t hide his excitement about what the future might hold with all three of them playing together on the same team.</p>

<p><em><strong>“It’s honestly crazy,”</strong></em> he said via <em>NHL.com. “If you told me a couple of years ago I’d be here with Adam Kleber and Ashton Schultz, two guys that I played on the same pee wee team growing up, I’d say you’re crazy, but it’s happening right now, and it’s pretty cool.”</em></p>



<p>For his part, Adam Kleber was also interviewed by the media about the situation and, without hesitation, echoed the words of his friend and now teammate, expressing similar excitement about what lies ahead.</p>



<p><em>“That was really cool,”</em> he said. <em>“I remember being in the (Sabres) draft suite and the guys were like, ‘Oh, Ziemer’s next on the list.’ I’m like, really? And then they picked him, and it was just kind of a crazy moment, kind of just a small world and how things happen.”</em></p>
