The Pittsburgh Penguins could soon be facing a significant shakeup on their blue lineâand Sidney Crosby might lose one of his most experienced teammates. As the offseason intensifies, one report links Erik Karlsson to a potential trade destination that could dramatically shift the Eastern Conference balance of power.
Following another bitter exit from the playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes are evaluating all options to reinforce their defense. With Brent Burns now gone via free agency, Carolinaâs front office appears focused on finding a high-end replacement on the right sideâand Karlsson is reportedly at the top of the list.
NHL analyst Jeremy Tingly reported that Carolina seriously considered pursuing the Swedish defenseman. The teamâs salary cap situation remains a hurdle, but the willingness to spendâand the Penguinsâ potential to retain part of Karlssonâs contractâmakes this scenario realistic.
Penguins could retain salary to facilitate deal
Karlsson, 34, carries a $10 million cap hit for two more seasons. That figure would typically dissuade suitors, but the Hurricanesâ position is unique. âThe team lost Brent Burns to free agency this summer and now have a big hole to fill on the right side of their blueline,â Tingly wrote.

He added: âItâs going to come down to money as Karlssonâs on the books for two more seasons at $10 million AAV, and if the Penguins will retain at least 20% of his remaining salary, the Hurricanes would apparently jump on the opportunity.â

Carolinaâs defense was a major strength in recent years, but with Burns departing, the depth has taken a hit. Karlsson may not be in his prime, but he remains one of the leagueâs most productive puck-moving defensemen. Adding him would not only fill the immediate void left by Burnsâit could also elevate Carolinaâs transition game and offensive generation from the back end.
Hurricanes still in win-now mode
Despite repeated postseason setbacks, the Hurricanes remain firmly in win-now territory. General manager Eric Tulsky has already addressed a major offseason priority by retaining forward Nikolaj Ehlers, but the next move could define the teamâs championship aspirations.
Karlssonâs combination of veteran leadership and high-end skill makes him an attractive target. The 2023 Norris Trophy winner could be exactly what head coach Rod BrindâAmour needs to push his team past the Florida Panthers and back into the Stanley Cup Final conversation.
Crosbyâs core may shift again
For the Penguins, any trade involving Karlsson would represent another chapter in a series of transitions around Sidney Crosby. While management remains committed to keeping the team competitive around its captain, a trade involving Karlsson might also signal a longer-term retooling.

As training camps approach, Karlssonâs future remains one of the more intriguing storylines to watch. If Carolina is serious about taking that next step, the veteran Swede could soon be swapping black and gold for red and white.
