2022 World Cup Qualifiers: Why isn’t Thiago Silva with Brazil?

For Thiago Silva and eight other teammates plus Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani it has been a rather frustrating last few days. The Chelsea defender along with various players of the Premier League were not allowed to join their national teams during international competition due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Brazil is on the United Kingdom’s red list countries and therefore if Silva traveled to South America for qualifiers he would have to return and have a mandatory 10-day quarantine period to rejoin his teammates. This was something clubs in the Premier League did not want to entertain and therefore requested that Thiago Silva’s call up be cancelled.

For Brazil it is a huge blow as they lost a total of 9 players due to this unexpected restriction, despite Conmebol’s assurance that all players called up to national teams would enter a covid-19 bubble, which in the past has failed. Thiago Silva was not happy about this and vented his frustration on Instagram as he will miss three big games that could virtually qualify Brazil to the 2022 World Cup.

Thiago Silva was not happy and took to Instagram to vent, uploading a story where he placed the text, “Do I really have to say anything?” and a GIF of someone’s hands being tied. Silva is one of the leaders of the Brazilian national team that sits first and undefeated, winner of all 6 of their qualifying games in South America.

Brazil will take on Chile away, and Argentina and Peru in this round of games. If Brazil wins these three games, it will all but qualify Tite’s team to the World Cup. The main match to watch is a rematch of the Copa America final between Brazil and Argentina who are both in sole possession of first and second place.
