Bayern Munich defeated Boca Juniors 2–1 on Matchday 2 of Group C, securing their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. Harry Kane gave the German side the lead, Miguel Merentiel equalized for the Argentine team, and near the end, Michael Olise scored the decisive goal.
In the first half, Bayern Munich showcased their dominance, controlling possession for most of the period and creating several dangerous chances. Harry Kane opened the scoring with a left-footed shot inside the box, while Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry came close to extending the lead.
Despite being outplayed, Boca Juniors fought hard and created their own opportunities. Kevin Zenon stood out, delivering a free kick and a follow-up shot—both expertly saved by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
In the second half, the Argentine side pushed higher up the field in search of an equalizer—and they found it in the 66th minute with a brilliant goal from Merentiel, who beat two defenders and fired past Neuer from inside the box.
In the minutes that followed, Boca controlled the tempo and avoided major threats. But with just seven minutes left, Kane set up Olise, who finished with finesse to beat AgustinMarchesin and seal the win for Bayern.
With the 2–1 result, Bayern Munich secured their place in the Round of 16. Boca Juniors will now need a big win over Auckland City and must hope that Benfica lose to the German side on Matchday 3 in order to advance.

GAME ON!
Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors are underway in the Club World Cup!
Bayern Munich’s next match
On Tuesday afternoon at Bank of America Stadium, Bayern Munich will close out their Group C campaign against Benfica. At the same time, Boca Juniors will face Auckland City, and the combination of results will determine which two teams advance to the next round.
Boca’s next match
After facing Bayern Munich tonight, Boca Juniors will have four days of rest before their next game. On Tuesday, they’ll play their final group stage match against Auckland City at GEODIS Park, looking for a win that could send them through to the Round of 16.
Head-to-head history between Boca Juniors and Bayern Munich
Friday night’s match will be the fourth meeting between these two teams. The first encounter was a friendly in 1925 that ended in a 1–1 draw. The next meeting, in 1967, was also a friendly, and the Argentine side came out on top 1–0.
The last time Boca Juniors and Bayern Munich faced each other—and the only official match so far—was on November 27, 2001. It was the Intercontinental Cup final that year, with both teams qualifying as winners of the Copa Libertadores and UEFA Champions League, respectively. Samuel Kuffour scored the goal that gave the German side the victory that day.
How are the Group C standings looking?
Earlier this Friday, the other Matchday 2 game in Group C was played. In that match, Benfica defeated Auckland City 6–0, earning their first win of the tournament—and, for now, moving them to the top of the group.
With the final Matchday 2 match still to come, Benfica currently lead the table with 4 points. Behind them are Bayern Munich with 3, also in a qualifying position for the Round of 16. Boca have 1 point, while Auckland City—already eliminated—remain at 0.

Hard Rock Stadium will host the match
Friday’s match between Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Opened in 1987 at an estimated construction cost of $115 million, the venue has a capacity of 64,767 spectators.
The stadium is primarily used by the Miami Dolphins of the NFL and the Miami Hurricanes, the University of Miami’s NCAA Division I college football team. However, it also regularly hosts other events, including MLB games, tennis tournaments, and motorsport races.
In soccer, it was the site of the 2024 Copa America final, where Argentina defeated Colombia 1–0 to claim their second consecutive title. Hard Rock Stadium is also set to be one of the venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Why isn’t Edinson Cavani playing for Boca Juniors?
The 38-year-old Uruguayan striker has been dealing with a calf injury for several weeks, which has prevented him from playing at full strength and keeping up with the competitive pace of matches. However, the Argentine side remains optimistic that Cavani will be available for Boca’s final Group C match against Auckland City on Tuesday.
The referee for tonight’s match
Alireza Faghani will be in charge of officiating the match between Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors in Group C of the Club World Cup. The 47-year-old referee, born in Iran and now an Australian citizen, is an experienced official. He also refereed the tournament’s opening match—a draw between Inter Miami and Al Ahly.
Faghani brings extensive experience in soccer, having officiated a dozen World Cup matches (including France’s 4–3 win over Argentina at Russia 2018), as well as previous editions of the Club World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Full officiating crew:
Referee: Alireza Faghani
