Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami have reportedly found trade partner in MLS for outcast player

Inter Miami are looking to make several changes in the roster to improve the competitiveness of the team. While they have acquired new players, now a Lionel Messi’s teammate could have already found a new destination in the MLS.

Since Javier Mascherano’s arrival at Inter Miami, the team has made significant strides, emerging as one of the most competitive squads in the Eastern Conference. It has bolstered its roster with standout players like Tadeo Allende, Telasco Segovia, and Rodrigo de Paul, who have been game-changers. However, Lionel Messi might soon part ways with an important teammate, as he has reportedly found a new home in MLS.

According to MLS insider Tom Bogert, Charlotte FC have reached an agreement to sign goalkeeper Drake Callender. The 27-year-old goalkeeper is reportedly caught off guard by the move, as he was not involved in the decision and had garnered interest from several other MLS franchises.

Even though Drake has appeared in just three games this season, his impact on Inter Miami has been significant. He played a crucial role on the roster that secured both the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and the 2023 Leagues Cup, marking Lionel Messi’s first titles since his arrival in the United States.

In the 2022-23 season, Callender delivered a superlative performance for Inter Miami that elevated his prominence on the team. Unfortunately, injuries sidelined him, allowing Oscar Ustari and Rocco Rios Novo to step into key roles, which relegated him to a secondary position. His potential move to Charlotte, however, could provide the perfect opportunity for a resurgence in his career.

Inter Miami target key roster changes in push for their first-ever MLS Cup title

Before stepping into the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano voiced a strong desire to have an expanded roster. A critical area for enhancement is the depth of their defense. As part of this strategy, the team has decided to sell a key midfielder in order to acquire a central defender. However, this might just be the beginning of a series of adjustments.

Sergio Busquets, one of the most important pillars of Inter Miami, has not yet renewed his contract. While Javier Mascherano spoke about his future, the uncertainty surrounding Busquets might push the team to seek reinforcements for the midfield. Moreover, the squad’s depth has been exposed several times, as seen in their recent defeat against Orlando City. Therefore, the team could continue to enhance its roster.
