However, Mascherano didn’t want to commit to any plan. “We’ll see, we’ll take it as it comes,” Mascherano added. “I don’t want to say one thing and then do another. It’s more a day-to-day thing, depending on how we feel.”

<h2>Inter Miami’s tight schedule</h2>



Inter Miami are back in MLS action after a strong showing in the Club World Cup, where they advanced to the knockout stage despite not being favorites. Now, Javier Mascherano’s team faces a tough string of fixtures, beginning with today’s match against CF Montreal.

After the early blow from Montreal’s goal following Lionel Messi’s mistake, it took Inter Miami a few minutes to regroup and refocus on the game plan laid out by head coach Javier Mascherano.

Based on the performance the Herons showed in the global tournament, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/javier-mascherano">Mascherano</a> believes the team must now display a more convincing level in MLS, which is presumed to be less demanding. “If we were clearly able to compete at that level, there’s no excuse not to be able to compete in our domestic league,” he said.



Indeed, Inter Miami rose to the occasion during the Club World Cup. After opening with a draw against Egypt’s Al Ahly that raised some questions, they delivered their best performance against what was, on paper, the group’s toughest opponent, Porto, winning 2-1. “That has to be a boost of confidence for everything we’re about to play — not just MLS, but also the Leagues Cup starting later this month,” Mascherano explained. “We’ll try to find a way to push the players to go all out. Because we’ve shown we can compete even against teams with far more pedigree than us.”

<h2>How are Inter Miami doing in MLS?</h2>



Unlike in most major leagues around the world, the Club World Cup did not bring MLS action to a halt. Teams not involved in the tournament continued playing in the domestic competition over the past several weeks, leaving Inter Miami, Seattle Sounders, and Los Angeles FC behind in the standings.

There is now speculation that he could follow the lead of other soccer legends, stepping away from Major League Soccer to compete in a more demanding league.



Messi has yet to publicly confirm whether he will play in the next <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/world-cup">World Cup</a> with Argentina, but he has made it clear that he wants to try. However, a key factor in his final decision will be whether he still feels capable of performing at the highest level of world soccer at age 39.



As was evident during the Club World Cup, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/inter-miami">Inter Miami</a> are still far from the level of Europe’s top clubs—something that doesn’t offer a very promising outlook for Leo, who is under contract with the Herons until December 2025 and has not yet progressed in talks to extend it.



“Messi would be considering playing in another league ahead of the 2026 World Cup,” journalist Esteban Edul recently said on ESPN. “I’m thinking Newell’s or Barcelona.” If something like this were to happen, it wouldn’t necessarily mean a permanent departure from Inter Miami. It could be a temporary move, with the intention of returning to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/MLS">MLS</a> after the World Cup.

<h2>The David Beckham precedent</h2>



If Lionel were to leave Inter Miami to focus on his preparation for the 2026 World Cup with Argentina, he would join a list of stars who made similar decisions in past decades.

The English icon arrived in the United States in 2007 from Real Madrid and had several standout seasons with Los Angeles Galaxy. However, as the 2010 World Cup in South Africa approached, he negotiated a return to Europe to try to secure a spot on England’s national team roster.



That’s why he arranged two loan spells with AC Milan, in 2009 and 2010. Ultimately, an Achilles tendon injury kept him from playing in his fourth World Cup, and he eventually returned to MLS, where he won titles in 2011 and 2012.



<h2>Thierry Henry did something similar</h2>



In addition to the significantly lower level of competition compared to Europe, MLS has a clear disadvantage when it comes to its calendar. While European leagues run from August to May almost without interruption, in the United States the season starts in late February, and many teams are done playing by November.



That’s exactly what happened to Messi in 2024: Inter Miami were eliminated in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs against Atlanta United, and the Argentine star went nearly four months without playing an official match—something that hadn’t happened during his time with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. To avoid a similar scenario ahead of the World Cup, Lionel might follow in Thierry Henry’s footsteps.



The French star joined New York Red Bulls in 2010 after a successful stint with Barcelona and remained there until his retirement in 2014. However, after the 2011 season ended in early November, Henry negotiated a temporary departure to stay in shape until the next MLS season began. That’s why he returned to Arsenal, where he played 7 matches and scored 2 goals before rejoining New York.

The 21-year-old midfielder had time to settle inside the box and fired a beautiful shot past goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. That lead was extended just before halftime when Tai Baribo struck with a powerful right-footed finish.



In the second half, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/inter-miami">Inter Miami</a> came out with renewed energy in search of a goal, and they found it 15 minutes in, when Jordi Alba set up Tadeo Allende for a header that cut the deficit. That goal gave Javier Mascherano’s side even more momentum, and they pushed forward aggressively—leaving space at the back that their opponents quickly exploited. Once again, Baribo found himself unmarked in the box to score, though the play was met with offside protests that were waved off by VAR.

The Herons were down by two goals with just three minutes remaining in regulation when referee Drew Fischer awarded them a free kick just outside the box. Naturally, it was Messi who stepped up—and he delivered with stunning precision and power, beating goalkeeper Andrew Rick.

With the deficit narrowed and a few minutes still on the clock, Inter Miami threw everything forward in search of the equalizer. In those final moments, anything could have happened: Philadelphia’s Danley Jean Jacques had a golden opportunity with a header that went just wide, and then Telasco Segovia became the hero.



With only seconds left, Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba exchanged a few passes on the left side. The ball found its way to Segovia, who controlled it and fired a powerful shot inside the left post to seal the 3–3 draw.



<h2>What’s next for Inter Miami?</h2>



With their last-minute draw against Philadelphia Union, Inter Miami avoided what would have been their sixth loss in their last eight matches. Now, they’ll face two more MLS games in the coming days: on Wednesday, they’ll take on CF Montreal at Chase Stadium, followed by another home clash against New England Revolution next Saturday.



These two matches will be the Herons’ final official games before the start of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Their debut in the tournament is set for Saturday, June 14, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, where they’ll face Egypt’s Al Ahly in the opening match.
