Opinion: DC United, a team in need of a change

DCUnited was the standard for which all MLS teams wanted to follow. We played attractive soccer, we won international tournaments, we had seven national team players on our squad. Now we are a shadow of what we use to be and D.C. fans want a change!

D.C. United is one of the oldest teams in Major League Soccer and by far one of the most decorated. D.C. has won four MLS Cups, two international trophies, and three U.S. Open Cups. How is it possible that with such a great history that D.C. United has become so stagnant?

D.C’s last MLS Cup was in 2004 and their last major trophy was in 2013. Yes, it’s true that through the years they had great players like “El Diablo” Etcheverry (Bolivia), Jaime Moreno (Bolivia), Raul Diaz Arce (El Salvador), Christian “Gomito” Gomez (Argentina), along with decorated American’s like Eddie Pope, John Harkes, and even Ben Olsen.

However, the past few years for the team have been painful, even with players like Wayne Rooney (England), Luciano Acosta, ex Boca Jr Player (Argentina), Lucas “TITI” Rodriguez (Argentina), and Paul Arriola (USA) but still, we continue to have one unsuccessful season after another.

A Lot of supporters are losing their hope & mostly their patience for Ben Olsen, he has been coaching the team for almost 10 years. He is in fact one of the longest-serving coaches in the league. His tenure has done little in the way of silverware or any type of decent soccer. He has an under .500 record at 131 wins, 89 draws, and 144 losses. These numbers are not what we want when we think of a coach for D.C. United.

In the last past few games, you could hear everyone from the stands singing “OLSEN OUT”. The supporters are tired of it, with that being said the fans are still there supporting through the bad & good times. A tradition that will never stop filling their new stadium (AUDI FIELD) that was open in 2018.

Game after game and even some that travel many miles away just to be there and show their support. Their Biggest Supporters are La Banda Del Distrito, District Ultras, La Barra Brava, & Screaming Eagles and we are officially tired of these horrible seasons. These are faithful fans that have been there through the good & bad times & even more in the bad times, we are not just fans, we are one big family.

As fans we are demanding a change, we want the front office to get their act together and find a real coach and a real style of play that represents the history of our beloved D.C. United.
